about me

I am a PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication. My work examines both the cultural studies and political economy of journalism, centering journalists as actors in the production of knowledge, norms, and history and as well as structures of media power, capitalism, and hegemony. My research is focused on journalism histories for the sake of critical and radical journalism futures, with a strong focus on media reparations and decolonial/anti-colonial movements. Originally trained as a journalist, I wrote for various outlets for eight years, which inspired my research in academia. When I’m not reading for classes or for pleasure, you can find me engulfed in newspaper archives, playing guitar and bass, and reading Joan Didion.

academia:

I matriculated at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania in the fall of 2022. My current research focuses on the political economy and culture of journalism with a strong emphasis on history. I graduated from Brown University in May of 2022 with my Master of Arts in American Studies, where I worked on Stolen Relations as a Research Assistant. Prior to my stint at Brown, I graduated in 2021 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communication Studies and a minor in Journalism.

journalism:

From 2017 to 2021, I was a student journalist at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), where I was elected the Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, The Retriever, for the 2020-2021 school year. I worked as the Opinions Editor for two years prior to that and I chose to focus primarily on integrity and community relations between the paper, the university administration and the demographic makeup of the university.

After returning from a semester abroad at King’s College London, where I was an ambassador to UMBC, I continued my student journalism, completed a media internship at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and an internship at The Baltimore Sun, where I was the sole Editorial Intern. Previously, I also worked as an intern at the Newseum, the UMBC Magazine, the UMBC Division of Professional Studies and Atwater’s.

personal:

Outside of research, I love music (both playing and listening! My favourite band is Beach House!), record and cassette collecting, and reading.
